STEMworks™ Hosts Successful 2024 GIS Day for Elementary Students

STEMworks™ welcomed 95 elementary school students on November 19, 2024, to Geographic Information System (GIS) Day at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Campus Center. The event brought together young learners for an immersive introduction to the world of GIS.

The day kicked off with an inspiring industry panel that showcased the diverse applications of GIS technology across various sectors including health care, government, infrastructure/ construction, environmental sciences, and education.

Students then participated in hands-on breakout sessions designed to spark their interest in spatial technology. These interactive activities included map reading exercises, field mapping projects, remote sensing demonstrations, and story mapping workshops. Each session provided students with practical experience in using GIS tools and understanding their real-world applications.

The positive feedback received from students and teachers highlighted how the combination of industry insights and hands-on learning experiences effectively opened students' eyes to exciting career possibilities!
