From Space Shuttles to Stars: Maui Middle Schoolers Inspired at AMOS Conference
Maui Economic Development Board's AMOS (Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies) Conference, the nation's leading technical conference on space situational awareness, opened its doors on September 20, 2024, to inspire the next generation of space pioneers. Local middle school students were treated to an extraordinary day of space exploration and career discovery at the Wailea Beach Resort – Marriott, Maui.
The highlight of Space Exploration Day was an inspirational keynote address by NASA Astronaut, Pam Melroy, one of only two women to have commanded a space shuttle. Col. Melroy shared her remarkable journey with the students, demonstrating that space careers are within reach for anyone with determination and passion.
Following the keynote, students dove into an array of hands-on activities provided by leading space industry organizations. This interactive "playground" gave students direct exposure to cutting-edge space technology and face-to-face connections with industry professionals, bringing the possibilities of space careers down to Earth for Maui's aspiring scientists and engineers.
