CASCADING INFLUENCES: Long-Term Impacts of Informal STEM Experiences for Girls

cascadinginfluences.jpg

The Franklin Institute has published a new research study on long-term impacts of informal science experiences on girls: Focused specifically on young women who participated in girls-only STEM programs at least 5-25+ years ago, the study documents young women’s perceptions of their experiences in these programs and the ways in which this participation influenced their future choices in education, careers, leisure pursuits, and ways of thinking about what science is and who does it. Additionally, it explores potential long-term influences on young women’s lives more generally, beyond STEM.

STEMworks™ Industry Day connects students to real world careers

KIHEI – STEM students from high schools across Maui County will be given a valuable look into the real world technology sector during STEMworks™ Industry Day, March 12th, at the Maui Research & Technology Park.

Local industry representatives will give a hands-on tour of their high tech companies and talk about the creative career opportunities available in Hawaii.

Students will learn firsthand how the software programs they’ve been currently using in their STEMworks™ labs apply to the real world — from engineering design to computer-aided design (CAD), geographic information systems (GIS) to 3D imaging, global positioning systems to webpage graphics.

By giving students a glimpse of the inside process, we can help them connect the dots to corresponding careers in the STEM industry.
— Isla Young, Program Director

“By giving students a glimpse of the inside process, we can help them connect the dots to corresponding careers in the STEM industry,” Program Director Isla Young said.  “They will also have a chance to talk directly with professionals about how they could prepare academically.”

Part of the day’s agenda will include a “talk story” session where high tech professionals tell their personal stories of how they got their start in science and technology.  Students will have a chance to ask questions and get direct answers from people working in the field.

“For a lot of the students, this will be their first time visiting the Tech Park and many are going to be pleasantly surprised at the possibility of working their dream job in their own backyard,” Young said.

“Industry Day provides an important link between the classroom and a wide range of STEM career paths.”

For more information, email Isla Young at isla@medb.org or call 875-2307.
