Schools of the Future

Island Energy Inquiry, a program within MEDB’s Women in Technology Project, presented alongside Ka Hei at the 2015 Schools of the Future Conference at Oahu. Ka Hei, a Department of Education program, promoting sustainability both in and out of the classroom gave resources to improve the learning environment. This program supports the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative and the DOE’s goal of 90& clean energy by 2040.

The IEI program promotes inquiry learning, helping students learn as scientists would.

Island Energy Inquiry Statewide Training

Women in Technology’s Island Energy Inquiry™ Program, in partnership with Ka Hei, completed three workshops within the last several months, reaching 71 teachers across the state.

Elementary teachers around Maui took part of a two-day workshop in September which unveiled the new hands-on energy focused IEI Elementary Curriculum! Teachers were able to use and test run the various elementary kits offered by the workshop.

Students grades 8 – 12 used their Fall break to learn how to code in Java taught by King Kekaulike High School’s senior Michael Reeves. As part of his senior project, Michael taught participants how to create a working calculator and their own games by learning various JAVA coding functions and tools and figuring out how to fix problems with the debugging process.

This workshop ran on two days, October 5th and 7th.

Eco-learning With EcoQoob

Women in Technology has partnered up with ecoQoob to inspire and excite the next generation leaders on Energy Efficiency with their new educational mobile app that’s currently under development for iOS and Android. This app allows users to become “energy detectives” and find ways for their home to be more efficient by creating their house on the app to see the various electronics around their household and to see how much energy it uses and how much it costs.
