MEDB Ke Alahele Education Fund awards $20,000 for innovative STEM projects

KIHEI, Maui, Hawaii – August 30, 2015 – This past Saturday’s MEDB Ke Alahele Education Fund Benefit Dinner & Auction held at The Fairmont Kea Lani attracted more than 550 community stakeholders; it also raised $309,000 (as of the time of this news release) to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) projects in Maui County and throughout the state.

Amongst the event’s highlights was the presentation of the Daniel K. Inouye Innovation Award.

A total of $20,000 was awarded to this year’s winners thanks to the MEDB Ke Alahele Education Fund which earmarked $10,000, and the Daniel K. Inouye Institute which matched the award with an additional $10,000. The first place winner received $10,000, second place $6,000, and third place $4,000.

Just like the popular TV show, the 8th annual 4-H Tech Connect event brought CSI technology to life for Maui County 4-H members.

4-H Tech Connect challenged over 65 elementary, middle and high school members to investigate a crime scene using the latest forensic techniques.

STEMworks Internship Statewide for High School Students

MEDB’s Women In Technology continues to facilitate a robust internship program for high school and college students across the islands of Hawaii, Lanai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu. During the summer’s 2015 STEMworks™ Internship program, over 40 interns were matched with a host company or organization based on the company’s project needs and the interest and skills of the student. Over the course of six weeks, interns were mentored by industry professionals to advance their real-world experience, build their interpersonal and team communication skills, build confidence in their technological skills and abilities, develop deeper or new insights into STEM and/or Agriculture educational and career pathways, and develop new tech skills and knowledge. While working on company projects, interns also participated in career and professional development training provided by MEDB to help support their internship experience and to help develop their professional skills.
